Advanced measuring buttonhole
Automatic buttonhole facility that includes an optical sensor to precisely
measure bead length so it can ensure accurately repeated buttonholes,
regardless of stitch density setting.

family (artista) A family of PC software products for creating embroidery
designs
Artlink software (artista)
PC software to connect Artista sewing machine to a PC enabling limited
pattern modification and access to designs from the internet.
Automatic buttonhole
Ability to sew the 6 components of a buttonhole under automatic control.
Automatic hoop recognition (artista)
The attached hoop is automatically recognized so that patterns that are
too large for it cannot be sewn.
Automatic thread cutter (artista)
Device that automatically cuts top and bottom threads when required.

Basting stitch/Long stitch
Facility to extend stitch length up to a maximum of 20mm

Over 60 specialised presser feet and accessories for every sewing task.
There is also a large collection of Bernina sewing publications including
a magazine published several times a year.
Bernina Stitch Regulator (aurora 440QE)
A device that automatically controls sewing speed to ensure even and consistent
stitches when free-hand quilting or stippling.
Bobbin thread monitor (artista)
Device that indicates when bobbin thread is running low.

CB shuttle
Traditional Bernina sewing mechanism that produces the finest quality
Bernina stitching.
Central colour screen (artista models)
High resolution colour displays more information and is clear to read.
It allows video clips and a true embroidery view. The central location
is the most ergonomic for frequent viewing.
Compartmented accessory boxes
Design of accessory box that contains specialised compartments and fixtures
for bobbins and presser feet.
Continuous reverse
Facility to sew any pattern in reverse sequence to avoid the need to turn
the work.
Creative consultant/sewing advisor (artista)
Indicates recommended settings and presser feet for a given sewing function
on a specific fabric. On the Artista 185 and 200 the upper thread tension
is automatically set.
Customised settings in memory (artista)
Customised stitch length and width settings may be stored and automatically
set when the stitch is selected.

DC motor
Motor type that allows high power at low speed enabling precision electronic
control.
Design CD (artista)
Embroidery patterns stored on the CD for direct access on Artista 200.
Direct access to pattern themes (artista)
Rapid selection of stitches from groups, quilting, practical or decorative
stitches, alphabets, buttonholes or embroidery functions.
Drop feed
Ability of the feed-dog that moves the fabric to drop below the bed of
the machine so that the fabric can be moved by hand – free-hand
sewing.

Embroidery module (artista
& aurora)
Device that attaches to sewing machine that enables high precision embroidery.
The fabric is rigidly held in a frame which is moved very accurately under
the needle by the module. The Aurora embroidery module requires a PC that
is not supplied.

F (favourite) button (artista)
A button located just above the needle which can be set or changed to
perform any frequently used function of your choice.
Free arm sew table
A table that increases the bed of the machine without additional support
so maintaining the free-arm capability.
Free-arm embroidery (artista & aurora)
Sleeves and other tubular items can be embroidered.

Half stitch with foot control
Facility to sew half a stitch, either taking the needle out or putting
the needle into the work, by tapping the rear of the foot control.
Hard cover
A durable cover to protect your machine and accessories when not in use or when being transported.
Hi-light sewing light
Unique Bernina shadow free sewing light that illuminates work with a bright
daylight U-shaped bulb.
History screen (artista 730E)
Screen that displays for selection last 15 patterns sewn.
Hoop parking (artista & aurora)
Locates the hoop so that conventional sewing can be done with the embroidery
module remaining attached.

Internet connection (artista
730E)
Facility to directly connect Artista730E to the internet. Requires a standard
telephone line and ISP account (not supplied).

Knee-lifter
Device that simultaneously raises the presser foot, lowers the feed dog
and relaxes the tension with a sideways movement of the knee. This means
that both hands can stay on the work at all times.

Lettering – arched

Long free arm
Additional length between the needle and body of machine providing more
room for large and bulky work.

Magnifying glasses
Clip onto the machine just above the needle to magnify the sewing area.
Mega hoop (artista 630E, 640E and 730E)
Special hoop that enables designs 2 times larger than with standard hoop
to be accurately sewn.
Mirror image
Ability to sew the mirror image of a pattern.
Monograms
Large letters sewn using sideways feed.

Needle positions
Horizontal positions of the needle bar to allow accurate positioning of
a seam.

Needle stop up/down
Facility to ensure that the needle stops either completely out or completely
in the work.
Needle threading device
Device that threads the needle with a minimum of effort.

On-screen button measuring
(artista)
Uses the touch screen to simplify the measuring of button size and determine
an appropriate length for the buttonhole.
On-screen help (artista)
Displays information for any stitch or function on the current screen
without interrupting what you are doing.
On-screen thread charts (artista)
Thread colours and names from major manufacturers displayed on screen.

Pattern begin
Start sewing at the beginning of a pattern sequence even if the machine
has previously been stopped in the middle.

Pattern elongation
Facility to faithfully increase the length of a pattern by adding stitches.

Stops sewing at completion of the pattern.

Ability to change size and shape of an embroidery pattern. The pattern

Degree of precision in rotating embroidery designs.
PC connection software
PC software for manipulating and optionally creating embroidery designs
for sewing on an Artista or Aurora.
Presser feet (Bernina)
Bernina presser feet are constructed from solid metal and combine both
sole and shank. They rigidly attach to the machine and will not move during
sewing so contributing to the Bernina stitch quality. The models 1008
and Activa 220 are supplied with standard clip-on presser feet soles but
the entire range of Bernina presser feet are available as options.

Rotary hook
High quality sewing mechanism required for extra wide zig-zag, bobbin
thread monitoring and automatic thread cutting.
Rotary knob for continuous stitch adjustment
Knob on machine that can be smoothly turned to give unrestricted adjustment
to stitch width while sewing.

Securing function
Automatically secures a single pattern or pattern combination by adding
4 stationary stitches at the start and finish.
Securing stitch
A straight stitch pattern that automatically secures the seam at the beginning
and end by sewing a short reverse sequence.
Set-up facility/personal program (artista)
Enables a variety of personal settings to be stored in the machine including
customised screens with frequently used stitches or patterns, audio feedback
and sewing speeds.
Sewing speeds
Facility to set a highest sewing speed below that of the maximum possible
to increase control.
Sideways feed (artista 730E)
Capability of the conventional fabric feed mechanism to pass fabric from
right to left under the needle in addition to forward and reverse. This
enables outline motifs and wide patterns to be sewn without requiring
frame embroidery.
Stitch altering area (artista 630E, 640E and 730E)
Display of adjusted stitch as it will appear when sewn.
Stitch density adjustments/pull compensation (artista)
Ability to adjust various embroidery stitch types to accommodate fabric
and design.
Stitch memory
Facility to record a sequence of stitches for subsequent or repeated sewing.
Stitch processor (artista & aurora)
Recalculation of embroidery stitching when a design is resized or adjusted
to preserve detail, density and appearance.
Upper thread monitor
Automatically notifies the user if the upper thread breaks. Unique to Bernina Artista and Aurora.
